(Landover, MD ) - One of the best cornerbacks to ever play the game, Darrell Green, will have his jersey retired on October 20, 2024 during halftime of the Commanders game versus the Carolina Panthers in week 7. Number 28 was selected 28th overall in the 1983 NFL Draft. The iconic Washington CB played a record 20 seasons for the organization, and maintains an NFL record for most consecutive seasons with an interception (19).

Darrell Green waves to the crowd at FedEx field in Landover, Maryland.
Darrell Green is the only player in Washington's history to receive the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. In addition, The 4x All-Pro was voted into 7 Pro Bowls and won the NFL's Fastest Man Competition a record 4 times, winning the competition every time he entered. Green was highly productive throughout the entirety of his career, including his last game versus the rival Dallas Cowboys where, at 43 years old, he returned a punt for 35 yards. This punt return is still the longest return of any kind amongst players that age.
Named to the 1990s All-Decade Team and the NFL's 100th anniversary All-Time team, Green broke numerous franchise records: most pick 6s (6), most career interceptions (54), longest fumble returned for a TD (78 yds), most game starts and games played (258 & 295, respectively). The "Ageless Wonder" also tied Jerry Rice for most seasons with at least one touch (20). He was enshrined into the Hall of Fall in 2008, played in 3 Super Bowls (XXII, XXVI & XVII) and won 2 Super Bowls (XXII & XXVI).
During a surprise announcement of his jersey retirement, Green stated, "I am beyond grateful for this honor and to new ownership, who embraced my wife and me from day one. I played my whole career here, met my wife here, served my church and community here, and I am humbled to have my jersey retired here. The team means everything to this community, and I am encouraged not only for us to win a Super Bowl, but to win the community back."
The Washington legend is the 5th player in franchise history to have a jersey retired, joining Sonny Jurgensen (No. 9), Bobby Mitchell (No. 49), Sammy Baugh (No. 33), and Sean Taylor (No. 21). If you would like to attend Darrell Green's jersey retirement game, click the link below to secure tickets.
